Two Dominant Pitching Performances Lead to Softball Split with Gulf Coast

SENATOBIA Harley Smith and Katie Brownlee combined to allow one run in 14 innings, but only managed a split with Mississippi Gulf Coast on Monday afternoon, falling 1-0 in the opener and winning 7-0 in the nightcap.

Northwest moved its record to 17-17 overall and 9-13 in the MACJC, while Gulf Coast dropped to 17-13 and 12-10 in the conference.

Northwest will look to keep its postseason hopes alive on Wednesday, April 18 at Mississippi Delta at 1/3 p.m.

Game 1  Gulf Coast 1, Northwest 0

Mya Hopson's solo homer to right-center in the top of the second inning was the lone blemish for Smith and the Rangers in the 1-0 opening game loss to MGCCC.

Northwest had a couple opportunities to tie or take the lead, but the Rangers left runners in scoring position in the third and sixth innings, squandering any attempt at a rally.

Smith went the distance, allowing a run on three hits and three strikeouts. She also accounted for one of the Rangers' two hits, doubling in the first, followed by Sarah Taylor's triple in the sixth.

Game 2 – Northwest 7, Gulf Coast 0

A complete game, six-strikeout performance from Brownlee was enough to lift the Rangers to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Brownlee also got the run support behind her in the second contest, as Alexis McShan gave Northwest a 2-0 advantage with her two-run double in the bottom of the first. Brownlee would then follow up with a hit of her own in the second, scoring Shelby Wilson on an RBI-grounder to short.

A wild sequence in the fourth drove in two more runs for Northwest, as Ally Judkins' single to third was followed by an error at third that allowed Wilson to score from second and Judkins to round the bases, extending the Ranger lead to 5-0.

Northwest continued to stretch its advantage in the fifth inning, as Taylor's two-run triple to right center drove in McShan and Maddy Politte, which would be good enough for the 7-0 victory.

Northwest finished the second contest with six hits, accompanied by four Gulf Coast errors.
