Katie Brownlee went 6-for-9 with a double and five RBIs,
Harley Smith and
Sarah Johnson both went yard and Northwest picked up an important road sweep at Mississippi Delta Wednesday afternoon by 12-4 and 5-2 finals.
Eleven different Rangers had at least one hit on the day. Johnson and Smith had four apiece behind Brownlee and
Maddy Politte added three hits.
Northwest improved to 19-17 overall and 11-13 in MACJC play and can still sneak in the postseason if they win out and get some help from other teams.
The Rangers will play their final four regular season games at home, hosting No. 10 East Central on Saturday, April 21 and Hinds on Monday, April 23.
Game 1 – Northwest 12, Delta 4
Leading by just one run, 5-4, heading into the final frame, Northwest exploded for seven runs off eight hits and a Lady Trojan error in the seventh to take a 12-4 game one victory.
Brownlee's two-run single to right gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the third and Johnson hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 4-0.
MDCC got right back in the game with one swing of the bat in the fifth, with Myah Wright hitting a three-run home run to straight-away center to make it 4-3.
The teams exchanged single runs in the sixth to make it 5-4 heading into the seventh.
An error in left to leadoff the inning, followed by five straight singles, helped Northwest explode for seven runs and a 12-4 lead.
Morgan Gresham, Brownlee and Politte each had two RBIs in the frame.
Smith scattered three earned runs over five innings to improve to 10-11 in the circle, while Brownlee tossed two scoreless frames to earn her first collegiate save.
Brownlee was 4-for-5 with five RBIs and Johnson was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
Game 2 – Northwest 5, Delta 2
The top of the Ranger lineup was a combined 7-for-12 with four runs scored and three RBIs and Brownlee threw six shutout frames as Northwest swept the season series 4-0.
What was just a 1-0 Ranger lead in the fifth stretched to 3-0 on Smith's two-run home run. It marked the sixth of her career, tied for most all-time in school history.
Mary Thornburg's pinch-hit, RBI-single added a run in the sixth and
Sarah Taylor's RBI-double made it 5-0 heading into the Lady Trojans' final at-bat.
A pinch-hit, two-run homer to left from Makenna Morgan made the final 5-2.
Brownlee improved to 7-4 in the circle in a complete game performance.
