Smith, Brownlee Toss Shutouts to Lift Rangers to Road Sweep at Coahoma

CLARKSDALE – Sophomore Harley Smith tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout with a career-high 10 strikeouts in the opener, followed by freshman Katie Brownlee's three-hit shutout and career-high seven punch outs in a pair of 8-0 and 3-0 wins over Coahoma Thursday afternoon.

Northwest improved to 9-11 overall and 3-7 in MACJC play with the sweep and have won five of its last six games overall.

The Rangers will travel to Summit for a 2/4 p.m. doubleheader against Southwest Mississippi (10-12, 3-9 MACJC) on Friday to close out a four-game road swing.

Game 1 – Northwest 8, Coahoma 0 (6 inn.)

A three-run top of the first, highlighted by Brownlee's RBI-single and Alexis McShan's two-run single, was all the run support Smith would need as she went the distance and allowed just three hits.

Northwest extended the lead to 5-0 in the third on McShan's squeeze bunt and an infield single by Ally Judkins.

McShan capped a four RBI game with a fielder's choice to plate pinch runner Cameron Hall for the Rangers' 8th run.

Northwest out-hit Coahoma 10-3, led by Brownlee, McShan and Judkins with multiple hits. The Lady Tigers committed six errors in the loss.

Game 2 – Northwest 3, Coahoma 0

Brownlee single-handedly willed the Rangers to a game two victory, hitting her first home run – at the collegiate or high school level – and tossing a shutout in the circle to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Scoreless after two, Brownlee drove a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to give Northwest a 2-0 lead in the third.

McShan singled, stole second and came around on an error to make it 3-0 after four, but that's all the offense either team could muster up in the finale.

Brownlee struck out a career-high seven Lady Tigers and allowed just three hits to improve to 3-3 on the year.

Northwest managed just six hits, with Maddy Politte going 2-for-3 behind Brownlee's two RBIs.
