SUMMIT – After getting run-ruled 8-0 in six innings in the opener, Northwest rallied behind the arm of freshman
Katie Brownlee in the nightcap to win 2-1 and split a softball doubleheader at Southwest Mississippi on Friday.
With the split, Northwest moved to 10-12 overall and 4-8 in MACJC play, while Southwest moved to 11-13 and 4-10.
Despite being out-hit 24-4 on the day, the Rangers picked up a huge split to finish 3-1 in conference play on the week and get within two games of .500.
Weather permitting, Northwest will host Blue Mountain JV/Southwest Tennessee on Monday, March 26 and a makeup doubleheader with No. 7 Gulf Coast on Wednesday, March 28.
Game 1 – Southwest 8, Northwest 0 (6 inn.)

Game 2 – Northwest 2, Southwest 1
Held to
Cameron Hall's lone double in the second inning, Northwest gritted out a 2-1 win in the finale thanks to a complete-game performance from Brownlee on a season-high 151 pitches.
The freshman hurler stranded 15 Lady Bear baserunners, including 12 in scoring position. She worked her way out of jams in every inning but one, including a game-ending 4-3 putout with the bases loaded.
Northwest led 1-0 after one, as
Shelby Wilson walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Smith's sac fly to right.
The Ranger lead was 2-0 after two, using Hall's double for their lone hit. Hall was sacrificed to third by
Heather Berry and scored on a wild pitch two batters later.
Southwest cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the third on Carrington Jefcoat's RBI-single to right-center, but left the bases loaded after a fielder's choice and fly out.
The Lady Bears threatened one final time in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs on three singles before Brownlee got the leadoff batter, Elsensohn, to groundout to second.
Southwest had 12 hits behind four Lady Bears with two or more.
