Northwest Downs Nationally-Ranked Holmes to Take Division Lead

SENATOBIA – Therrell Gosier II posted his fifth career double-double and Northwest held Holmes' starting five to eight made field goals as the Rangers got their revenge from a lopsided loss in Goodman three weeks ago with a 69-64 victory Monday night.

Northwest stayed unbeaten at home and improved to 17-2 overall and 8-1 in the north division to take over sole possession of first. Holmes fell to 17-3 and 7-2 in division play.

The Rangers led by as many as 14 with under 14 minutes to play and led for all but 12 minutes on the night.

Northwest took its largest lead of the first half, 21-16, with 4:19 to play before a 9-3 Bulldog run to close the half gave the visitors a 25-24 lead at the break.

After shooting just 29 percent in the opening 20 minutes, Northwest found its offensive rhythm in the second by shooting 52 percent on 15-of-29 aim.

Tied at 27-all minutes into the second, a 12-2 Ranger run was started on a pair of Gosier free throws and ended on Jitaurious Gordon's 3-pointer in front of the Northwest bench.

The lead grew to 14 and stayed around double figures the ensuing seven minutes until the Bulldogs made a push.

A technical foul by Holmes' head coach fired up his team and the Bulldogs responded with a 12-2 run of their own to make it a 61-59 game with 3:57 to play.

Tremont Robinson's 3-pointer on the Rangers' next possession, however, stretched the lead back to five and Holmes would not get any closer than three points the rest of the way.

In a physical and heated contest throughout, the teams were whistled for a combined 55 fouls, six technical fouls and four foul outs. Holmes was 19-of-25 from the line, while Northwest finished 16-of-29 at the charity stripe.

Behind Gosier's team-high 18, Robinson had 13 and Gordon finished with 11. Holmes was led by Mikkel Norment's 19 and 16 from Winford Ross.

Northwest will travel to Moorhead on Monday, Feb. 12 for an 8 p.m. tipoff at Mississippi Delta.
