FULTON – A strong second half performance, which was highlighted by a 29-point fourth quarter, proved to be the difference-maker for Itawamba on Thursday night, as Northwest fell 91-59 to close out the regular season.
Northwest dropped to 13-9 overall and 8-4 in the MACJC North Division. ICC improved to 14-7 and 8-4 in the division with the win.
Northwest led 6-0 out the gate after a pair of layups from
Abbreanna Miller and one from
Kayla Bradley, but the Lady Indians responded with a 12-2 run to quickly take the lead at 12-8.
Leading 32-31 with 4:31 left before halftime, the Lady Rangers went cold from the floor and were shutout for the remainder of the first half.
ICC, on the other hand, picked up the hot hand from three-point range with a pair of treys from Constance Dunn and one from Shaniyah Buford, closing the second quarter on a 12-0 run to lead 44-32 at the break.
Itawamba led by double figures for the entire second half and never looked back. Leading 75-56, the Lady Indians closed out the final five minutes of the contest on a 16-3 run to add the exclamation point on the victory.
Northwest had no answer for the Lady Indians' outside shooting, as ICC shot 65 percent from downtown along with 49 percent from the field.
Mercades Ward was the only Lady Ranger to finish in double figures, scoring 12 on the night with five steals. Bradley and Miller added nine points apiece and Miller finished just shy of a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds.
Dunn led Itawamba with 21 points and was 4-of-7 from three-point range. Buford followed with 17 points, and two other players (Eryka Williams, Lauren Fitch) finished with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Northwest will turn its sights on next week's MACJC Tournament as the No. 3 seed from the north division. The Lady Rangers will face off against the second seed from the south division, Copiah-Lincoln (20-3), on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
