EMCC Snaps Five-Game Lady Ranger Winning Streak, 84-74

SCOOBA – Despite 19 points from Chrissah Shaw and 13 off the bench from Ciara Pettis, Northwest was unable to match a big night from Tyeisha Juhan and East Mississippi, as the Lady Lions defeated Northwest 84-74 on Thursday night.

With the loss, Northwest fell to 10-7 overall and 5-2 in the MACJC North Division. EMCC improved to 9-7 and 4-3 on the season.

Juhan got EMCC going from the start, sinking the Lady Lions' first nine points of the contest. Northwest tried to keep pace with some points from Pettis and Emily Bush off the bench and the Lady Rangers led 20-18 after the first quarter.

East Mississippi would regain the lead early in the second quarter and swelled its lead to as much as 13 just before halftime. A pair of layups from Pettis and Astraea Moore allowed Northwest to cut the lead down to 40-31 at the break.

Northwest continued to struggle against the fast-paced Lady Lions in the second half, as EMCC led by 14 in the early stages of the third quarter. Using some momentum sparked by Pettis and Bush from three-point range, the Lady Rangers managed to cut the lead down to five entering the fourth quarter.

Although Northwest twice trimmed the lead down to three, East Mississippi maintained its advantage over the Lady Rangers and extended the margin back to 10 with under a minute left to go, snapping the Lady Rangers' five-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, Northwest outscored EMCC 41-11 in bench points. Along with 13 points from Pettis, the Lady Rangers also got nine apiece from Bush and Moore and six from Brooke Walker.

Juhan led all scorers with a 24-point, 10 rebound double-double and had 19 first half points for EMCC. Kayla Rogers also finished with a double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds) for the Lady Lions.

Both teams finished near even from the floor, with Northwest shooting 44 percent compared to 45 percent from East Mississippi.

Northwest will look to get back on the winning track when Northeast (13-5, 6-1 north) visits Howard Coliseum on Monday, Feb. 5. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. with live video available on nwccrangers.com/watch.
