SENATOBIA – Trailing by as many as 24 early in the second half, Northwest put together a furious rally and took the lead on its last possession before a Christian White free throw with 0.3 ticks left helped No. 19 ASU Mid-South escape Howard Coliseum with a 71-70 win.
Northwest (2-2) took its first and only lead, 70-69, with 8.1 seconds remaining on
Nick Edwards' contested layup in traffic.
The lead was short-lived, however, with a technical foul called on the Rangers on the ensuing in-bounds play. Northwest was whistled for reaching over the end line for a second time, a rarity, allowing Jalen Lynn to sink a tying free throw on the other end.
ASU Mid-South (4-2) then got the benefit of another whistle on the final play, with White grabbing an offensive rebound off a Lynn miss and getting fouled with 0.3 seconds left.
White missed the first but swished the second to help the Greyhounds steal a 71-70 victory.
Northwest trailed 42-24 at the half after being held to 8-of-33 shooting from the floor.
The big Ranger comeback started with 12:49 left and ASU Mid-South leading 54-38, as Edwards sank two free throws and
Kendrick Fountain added a pair.
Northwest forced five straight turnovers thanks to its full-court press and turned them into easy buckets on the other end. What was a 16-point deficit was trimmed to just one on a 16-1 run to make it 55-54 with 7:04 to play.
Quez Williamson scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half and added six assists, six rebounds and six steals.
Lynn led all scorers with 22 for Mid-South. Kamron Rose added 16 points and 14 boards.
Jitaurious Gordon had 18 points to lead the Rangers, followed by Williamson's 15 and 11 from Fountain.
