Northwest Drops a Pair at Mineral Area Holiday Classic

PARK HILLS, Mo. – Playing for the first time in nearly a month, Northwest showed signs of rust in a pair of lopsided losses at the Mineral Area Holiday Classic on January 1-2 at Sechrest Fieldhouse.

Northwest fell 68-34 to 11th-ranked Moberly Area and 84-50 to the host Lady Cardinals to drop to 5-5 on the season.

Against Moberly, Northwest trailed 36-24 at the half and managed just 10 points the final 20 minutes. The 34 points is the lowest outing for the Lady Rangers since a 38-33 loss to Northeast in 1952.

Brooke Walker had a career and team-high 14 points to lead Northwest on a night where Lady Ranger starters only scored two points on 1-of-12 shooting.

Anisha George's double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds) paced Moberly in addition to a game-high 24 from Carnethia Brown.

Moberly outshot Northwest 43 percent to 30 percent and owned a plus-23 edge on the boards.

Facing Mineral Area (10-3) for a second time this season, Northwest again sputtered down the stretch and was outscored 49-23 in the second half in a 34-point loss.

Northwest played balanced minutes and all 14 Lady Rangers saw the floor. Abbreanna Miller had 14 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes and Ciarra Pettis added nine off the bench.

Five Lady Cards scored in double figures, led by 18 from Makenzy Smith. Briar Johnson had 18 rebounds and six points in 18 minutes.

Mineral Area outshot Northwest 41 to 30 percent, outrebounded the Lady Rangers 60-39 and held Northwest to 5-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Northwest will step back into division play on Thursday, Jan. 11, traveling to rival Northeast for a 5:30 tip-off in Booneville.
