Resilient Rangers Rally for 89-82 Overtime Win at No. 24 Northeast

BOONEVILLE – Tremont Robinson scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half and overtime and added six steals to help Northwest rally from a 10-point deficit late and knock off 24th-ranked Northeast, 89-82, Thursday night on the Tigers' home floor.

Northwest snapped Northeast's 11-game home winning streak in improving to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in division play, while the Tigers fell to 10-3 and 1-1 in the north.

Despite outshooting the Tigers 47-40 percent in the opening 20 minutes, the Rangers trailed 39-37 at the break. Jitaurious Gordon had 13 first-half points to lead all scorers, hitting a barrage of 3-pointers early.

Northeast quickly built the lead to six and to as large as 63-53 with 8:31 to play before Northwest turned up the defensive pressure with a full-court press to claw back in it.

Northwest had eight steals alone in the game's final 5:57, three from Justin Flakes and five from T. Robinson, and turned them into easy baskets on the other end.

Robinson's steal and layup with 2:01 to play in regulation gave the Rangers their first and only lead, 75-73, in the second half.

Gordon sunk the back end of a two-shot foul to tie the game at 78-all with 22 seconds left, and after a block by Therrell Gosier II, steal by Robinson and timeout, Northwest had a chance with 2.3 ticks left for the win.

Gordon's heave right near mid-court and in front of the Ranger bench sailed right over the rim by a mere inches to force the overtime period.

Northwest quickly fell behind 80-78 on a Bryce Smith jumper but would score the next 11 points to pull ahead 89-80 and seal the come-from-behind victory.

T. Robinson had seven of his 21 points in the overtime period as the Rangers outscored the Tigers 11-4.

Radarius Washington had a big second half in addition to Gosier and Robinson, scoring seven points and adding 11 boards to post his first career double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Northwest forced Northeast into 26 turnovers on the night and picked up 17 steals, 13 of them in the second half and overtime. The Tigers owned the edge on the glass and in field goal percentage.

Five Rangers finished in double figures, including 21 from T. Robinson, 16 from Gordon, 15 points and nine rebounds from Gosier, 13 from Flakes and Washington's double-double.

Northeast was led by Bryce Smith's 20 points and 16 rebounds and had four scorers in double figures.

Northwest will face red-hot Holmes (11-1, 2-0) on Tuesday, winners of 11 straight, in an 8 p.m. tipoff at Frank Branch Coliseum. Live video and stats will be available.
