FULTON – In a battle for second place in the north division, Monday's Northwest-Itawamba matchup lived up to the hype.
Scoreless after 90 minutes in regulation, Itawamba and Malarie Scott found the golden goal in the 6th minute of the first overtime when the Lady Rangers were whistled for a foul in the box. Scott stepped up and connected on a penalty kick just outside the reach of
Liv Nault, who guessed correctly, to give ICC the 1-0 win.
Nault was superb with 14 saves, her third match with double digit saves, but the offense was shutout for just the third time in eight games this season.
Scoring opportunities were hard to come by in the first half, with
Mary Catherine Hutchens and
Angelica Justice providing the best chances in the early going.
Still scoreless late into regulation, Northwest looked to continue its late-magic scoring in the 88th minute.
Madison Thrasher sailed a ball into the box that was saved by Haley McGill and landed right at her feet where a waiting
Landyn Hoover barely got a foot on it before being scooped up.
Itawamba then got the benefit of a foul right at the edge of the box and scored eight minutes later for the victory.
ICC owned a 19-10 advantage in the shot column, including 15-3 on goal.
Northwest will look to bounce back on Friday, hosting Motlow State at 3 p.m. (was originally 4 p.m.)
