PERKINSTON –
Landyn Hoover's go-ahead goal in the 88th minute capped a Northwest rally in the game's final 17 minutes, as the Lady Rangers shocked Mississippi Gulf Coast 2-1 Friday afternoon to split the season series.
Northwest improved to 5-2 overall with its third straight win and remained unbeaten on the road in three tries. MGCCC dropped to 3-4-1 with the loss.
Trailing 1-0 in the 73rd minute,
Carolyn Rials netted her second goal of the year to knot the match at 1-1, seconds after attempts from
Caitlan Dew and
Autumn Harra sailed wide right and wide left.
Angel Hailey, who entered in net for
Liv Nault in the 69th minute, picked up three key saves to keep it a tie match late and setup an exciting finish.
Dew looked to have the game-winner seconds before Hoover's went in in the 88th minute, but Chascidi Martin made a great save for MGCCC. It wasn't 20 seconds later that Hoover fired a shot that bounced off the keeper's hands and trickled into the net for the 2-1 win.
Nault had eight saves before leaving late in the second half, and allowed the one goal, while Hailey moved to 3-0 in the win-loss column.
Gulf Coast had a slight 16-14 shot margin, while Northwest led 6-4 in corner kicks.
The three-match win streak is the Lady Rangers' longest since 2014. They'll travel to north division foe Itawamba on Monday afternoon for a 2 p.m. first kick on
