SENATOBIA – A trio of Northwest baseball athletes will get the chance to continue their careers next season at the four-year level.
Outfielder
Aaron Campbell will play at the Division I level for Austin Peay, while pitcher
Dalton Minton and designated hitter
Spencer Cayten are headed to Delta State and William Carey, respectively.
A two-year starter for the Rangers, Campbell ended his Ranger career tied for first in games started (99), second in doubles (28), at-bats (354) and games played (100), ninth in hits (114) and 10th in RBIs (84). The Ellendale, Tenn. native was a two-time second team All-MACJC selection and hit .322 for his career, leading the team in doubles (16), runs batted in (48) and multi-RBI games (13) as a sophomore.
Austin Peay is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I and is coming off a 28-win season that ended with a loss to Belmont in the OVC Championship game.
A mainstay in the Rangers' rotation over the past two seasons, Minton built upon a successful freshman season (3-1, 2.55 ERA) and capped his sophomore season at 7-4 with a 2.62 ERA, three complete games and team-best 69 strikeouts in 72 innings of work. The left-hander from Horn Lake wrapped up his Northwest career at 10-5 overall with a 2.59 ERA and finished tied for seventh all-time with 115 strikeouts.
Minton was also named second team All-MACJC for his sophomore performance and will join former Ranger teammates
David Herrington,
Jamell Newson and
Jonathan Lindsey at DSU.
As a member of the Gulf South Conference in Division II, Delta State achieved a 45-13 record, the GSC championship and hosted the NCAA South Regional before falling to Colorado Mesa in the quarterfinal round of the Division II College World Series.
Following an injury-plagued freshman year, Cayten arrived in the Northwest lineup with a vengeance halfway through the 2017 season. The Purvis native played in the final 36 games, earning the start in 30 contests mostly as the team's designated hitter. His batting average soared to .339 by the end of his sophomore campaign, good for second on the team and he finished with eight doubles, three triples, four home runs and 28 RBIs.
Cayten was tabbed second team All-MACJC, Capital One Academic All-District 1 and was selected as the school's first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American for his efforts on the field and in the classroom.
William Carey capped off its season with a 45-20 record and a loss to Lewis-Clark State College in the semifinals of the NAIA World Series.
