SENATOBIA – Northwest earned a big home split with 5th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 9-2 before a thrilling 5-4 win in the finale.
The win over Gulf Coast was Northwest's fourth over a nationally-ranked team this season, also defeating 18th-ranked Pearl River twice and 12th-ranked East Central in March.
Northwest improved to 18-14 overall and 12-8 in conference play with eight regular season games remaining. MGCCC moved to 28-9 overall and 17-3 in the MACJC with the split.
Game 1 –
#5 Gulf Coast 9, Northwest 2
Izzy Werdann's two-run home run highlighted a four-run first inning for the Bulldogs and they never looked back in a game one win. Nora Keehn (13-4) scattered six hits, two runs and six strikeouts in the complete-game win.
Northwest scratched across single runs in the second and third on an RBI-single from
Harley Smith and RBI-double from
Sallie Rose Carver to pull within 5-2 after three.
Lexie Mathis' solo home run to lead off the fifth extended MGCCC's lead to 6-2 and they scored the final four in the 9-2 victory.
Leeah Henson, who entered for
Tori Luke after a 4-0 deficit and no outs in the first, had a gutsy relief outing and went the full seven innings, scattering eight hits and four earned runs.
Game 2 –
Northwest 5, #5 Gulf Coast 4
Sallie Rose Carver's go-ahead RBI-double in the sixth provided the eventual game-winning run and
Harley Smith tossed a 129-pitch complete-game to lift Northwest to an upset win in the finale.
Northwest led 2-0 after one thanks to back-to-back RBIs from Carver and Luke before MGCCC rallied with three in the third to lead 3-2. Precious Sanders led off the inning with a triple and scored off a squeeze bunt before Werdann's second home run of the day.
Allison Williams' RBI-single through the right side tied the game at 3-3 in the third and Carver's RBI-single to left put the Rangers back on top 4-3 after four.
MGCCC tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth on Sanders' RBI-single to right but Smith buckled down to strand the bases loaded with a fly out.
Morgan Gresham's leadoff double in the sixth put the go-ahead run in scoring position and
Kailey Walker's sac bunt moved her to third with one out. After a strikeout, Carver's third hit of the game, a double to left-center, scored Gresham for the game-winning run.
Smith allowed two singles in the seventh but got a shallow pop fly at short to clinch the upset victory. She improved to 10-7 on the year, allowing three earned runs with five strikeouts.
Northwest will hit the road for a pair of doubleheaders at Northeast and Southwest Mississippi this week.
