BOONEVILLE – Northwest dropped an MACJC softball doubleheader on Tuesday at Northeast, falling by a pair of 5-0 and 8-0 finals.
Northeast improved to 25-17 overall and 11-11 in the MACJC, while the Rangers dropped to 18-16 and 12-10 in conference play.
Game 1 –
Northeast 5, Northwest 0
Jessica Boyd held the Ranger bats in check in game one of the doubleheader, limiting Northwest to four hits on the day. After two scoreless innings, Boyd found a little run support after a two-run, bottom of the third allowed Northeast to take a 2-0 lead.
Northwest failed to get on the board in the fourth and the Lady Tigers took full advantage in the bottom of the frame, as a two-run triple from Hannah Cox pushed the lead to 4-0. Madison Davis followed with an RBI-grounder to second to score the fifth and final run for Northeast.
Northeast out-hit the Rangers 10-4 in the first game, with Cox and Tia Davis combining to go 5-for-8 with a double, a triple and two RBIs at the top of the Lady Tigers' order.
Ally Judkins went 2-for-3 at the plate for Northwest in the game one loss.
Both Boyd and
Harley Smith went the distance for their respective teams, with Boyd (17-7) notching three strikeouts and surrendering a walk in the top of the first. Smith (10-8) struck out five Northeast batters.
Game 2 –
Northeast 8, Northwest 0 (5 innings)
Northeast wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to set up the 8-0 victory and the series sweep.
Kristen Cartwright's RBI-double helped the Lady Tigers strike first and a single up the middle from Shaquera Wilson made it a 2-0 lead. Lexi Brazeal would close out the opening inning with an RBI-single to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Northeast would tack on two more runs in the second inning before a three-run fourth inning sealed the Rangers' fate.
Rebekah Morris tossed five scoreless innings for Northeast, striking out three Ranger batters.
Northwest was held to just two hits in game two, both coming from
Allison Williams.
Northwest will travel to Southwest Mississippi on Thursday, April 13 for its final regular season road doubleheader. First pitch in Summit is scheduled for 2 p.m. on
