SENATOBIA – The 14th-ranked Itawamba Indians handed Northwest its first home losses of the season on Thursday, sweeping the Rangers by 10-1 and 9-6 finals.
Itawamba improved to 25-9-1 overall and 14-4 in the MACJC with the sweep while Northwest fell to 17-13 and 11-7 in conference play.
Caroline Dickins held the Rangers to one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in a 10-1 win in five innings to open the day. Dickins got all the run support she would need in the second inning, with ICC scoring five runs on four hits, all with two outs, for an early 6-0 lead.
Sallie Rose Carver's one-out double in the fourth snapped Dickins' no-hit bid and she'd score two batters later on
Allison Williams' RBI-single up the middle for the Rangers' lone run.
ICC out-hit Northwest 12-4 in game one, with the top of the Indian order going 6-for-10 with five RBIs and seven runs scored.
Northwest led 4-3 after five innings in the nightcap only to see the Indians score six runs over the final two frames to take a 9-6 win and complete the sweep.
Kaitlyn Rhodes' three-run homer to left gave ICC a 3-0 lead after one.
After scratching a run across on an error in the fourth to make it 3-1, Northwest took its first lead of the day in the fifth.
Tori Luke reached on an error with two outs to keep the inning alive and Williams followed a batter later with a two-run triple to put the Rangers on top 4-3.
Maime Hollenhead singled to leadoff the sixth for ICC, stole second and third and scored on Rhodes' sac fly to make it 4-4 after six.
ICC would then push ahead in the seventh, again rallying with two outs. After working around a double,
Harley Smith pitched around Alex Brown and walked Meg Sullivan to load the bases to allow a force at any bag. Hollenhead then delivered a big two-run single up the middle and was followed by an RBI-single and double for a quick five runs and a 9-4 lead.
Northwest attempted to rally in the bottom half, using an RBI-single from Williams and
Leeah Henson fielder's choice to pull within 9-6. But Northwest would strand the bases loaded to end the game on a foul out.
Carleigh Mills went the distance for ICC in the circle, scattering eight hits, six runs (one earned) and seven strikeouts. Smith took the loss, surrendering all nine runs, to fall to 9-7 on the season.
Williams was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and
Ally Judkins added a pair of hits in the game two loss.
Northwest will close out an 8-game homestand on Saturday at noon against 5th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast.
