SENATOBIA – Northwest split a baseball doubleheader with Coahoma on Wednesday evening at Jim Miles Field, with the Tigers using
Hunter Wilson's three-run home run in the ninth to stun the Rangers 7-6 in the opener before a 9-6 bounce back win in the nightcap behind
Kyle Moore's complete game.
Northwest moved to 18-12 overall and 6-6 in the MACJC with the split while Coahoma moved to 11-15 and 2-10 in conference play.
Tied 3-3 after three in the opener,
Spencer Cayten's two-run single in the fifth put Northwest on top 5-3 and the Rangers held a two-run lead into the ninth. But one swing of the bat from Wilson off Ranger closer
J.G. Lipscomb changed everything, with Wilson's fly ball to right riding a 25 mph win just feet out of the park for the eventual game-winner.
Aaron Campbell's RBI-triple, followed by
Grant McMinn's RBI-double, put Northwest on top 2-1 after one inning.
David Herrington's leadoff home run to right-center for his 100th career hit tied the game at 3-3 in the third.
Two walks in the ninth from Lipscomb setup Wilson's three-run home run to right on the first pitch he faced.
Justin Milam's two-out double put the tying run on in the bottom half before a fly out ended it.
Harrison Sandridge logged his sixth quality start in his first seven collegiate outings but got the no-decision.
Nathan Harrison tossed two scoreless innings before Lipscomb, the MACJC's saves leader, blew his second save to fall to 2-2.
Wyatt Bailey tossed the final two innings in relief of starter Eduardo Munoz, allowing three hits and one run for the win.
Northwest out-hit Coahoma 14-8 and held the Tigers to just four hits the final six innings. Herrington,
Dakota Dailey, Campbell, McMinn and Cayten each had multiple hits in the loss.
Kyle Moore was tagged for five runs in the first three innings in the nightcap as the Rangers fell behind 5-0, but he settled in and held Coahoma to two hits and no earned runs the final four innings to earn his first collegiate win.
An eight-run bottom of the third was all the run support Moore needed, with Northwest sending 12 batters to the plate and pushing across eight runs on six hits. Campbell's bases-clearing triple to right, his second triple of the day, highlighted the big inning.
Zack Pope, Herrington and McMinn all added RBIs in the frame.
Herrington's leadoff home run to left in the fourth, his team-leading sixth of the year, made the final 9-6.
Northwest will close out a 10-game homestand on Saturday, welcoming Southwest Mississippi to town for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Live video and live stats will be available at nwccrangers.com.
