PERKINSTON – A pair of Round of 16 victories for Piper Johnson and Emily Standard highlighted this week's action for the Northwest women's tennis team at the MACJC Championship.

Johnson's 6-1, 6-1 victory against Lucy Oakes (Holmes) and Standard's 6-3, 6-4 win against Amber Norris (NEMCC) allowed the sophomore pair to advance into the quarterfinals.

Both players were defeated in that round, however, as Johnson fell to nationally-ranked, No. 42 Paulina Estrada (MGCCC) and Standard dropped to Rachel Sollie (MCC).

Emily Blackmarr and Emily Newman also posted great efforts in the Round of 16, with Newman falling in a three-set battle 7-5, 4-6, 1-6 to Charity Tedford (ICC).

All of the Lady Rangers found their way into the quarterfinal round in doubles, with Harlie Ray/Blackmarr and Standard/Newman receiving first round byes. Johnson and Kim Crider earned their right to the quarterfinal round with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 win against the Copiah-Lincoln duo of Bayli Battle and Susanna Ratcliff.

Johnson and Crider also provided the toughest battle in the quarterfinal round, with the Northwest duo falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Sollie and Taylor Miller (MCC).

Overall, the Lady Rangers finished ninth out of 10 teams in the tournament.
