NEW ALBANY – Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, the Northwest women's tennis team rallied for a sweep in singles competition to defeat Northeast 7-2 on Friday.
A shutout on the No. 2 position from
Piper Johnson and
Kim Crider was the lone doubles victory for the Rangers, as Northeast claimed the other two matches at the No. 1 and 3 slots.
Northeast failed to carry the momentum over into singles play, however, as the Rangers collected wins on all six courts. Johnson and
Emily Standard notched straight-set victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 slots, while
Emily Newman took a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Sara Talley on No. 6.
Freshmen
Harlie Ray and
Kim Crider also captured their first collegiate singles victories, with Ray defeating Abbey Hollowel 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 position and Crider taking down Kristina Taylor 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot.
Emily Blackmarr also held off Meredith Murphy in a tight match, 7-6 (3), 6-2, to claim her second straight victory.
Northwest improved to 1-3 on the season with the win and will host No. 21 Gulf Coast on Tuesday, April 4. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
