Co-Lin Sweeps Softball Twinbill in Wesson

WESSON – Northwest dropped a conference softball doubleheader at Copiah-Lincoln on Sunday, falling 5-2 and 8-5.

Co-Lin improved to 9-15 overall and 4-8 in the MACJC with the sweep, while Northwest fell to 13-11 and 7-5 in conference play.

Bailey Root kept the Rangers on their heels in the opener, tossing a complete game and holding Northwest to just four hits and two runs.

Kamryn Vanlandingham's three-run home run to left with two outs gave the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead after two.

Northwest scratched two runs back in the fourth to pull within 3-2, using Sallie Rose Carver's RBI-single and scoring her two batters later on an infield error. Ally Judkins was thrown out at home on Carver's single to prevent the potential game-tying run.

Co-Lin would plate single runs in the ensuing two frames and Root didn't allow a hit down the stretch in the 5-2 win.

Britt led Co-Lin's 10-hit attack with a 4-for-4 game. Four Rangers combined for four hits.

Tori Luke (6-4) suffered the loss, allowing five runs off seven hits and five walks in 5.2 innings of work.

Co-Lin continued to swing a hot bat in the nightcap, finishing with 13 hits, led by Vanlandingham's 4-for-4 game in the leadoff spot. The Lady Wolves plated three in the first and never looked back in an 8-5 win.

Northwest got as close as 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI-double from Harley Smith and infield single by Morgan Gresham before Co-Lin scored three runs in its half of the frame to stretch the lead back to 8-3.

Sarah Taylor's leadoff double gave the Rangers some life in the seventh and RBI-singles from Gresham and Ally Judkins made it 8-5 before a groundout ended it.

Northwest stranded 13 baserunners in the loss, leaving at least two on in five different innings.

Gresham had a career game, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the No. 9 spot to lead a 14-hit Ranger attack.

Christian Black picked up the win for Co-Lin in five innings, scattering nine hits and three runs (one earned). Smith suffered the loss in a complete game, allowing all eight runs on 13 hits to fall to 5-5.

Northwest will host Mississippi Delta on Wednesday, March 29 (was Tuesday) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
