Rangers Rally at Coahoma for Doubleheader Sweep

CLARKSDALE – Northwest rallied for a pair of come-from-behind wins at Coahoma on Thursday afternoon to sweep the Lady Tigers 9-4 and 4-2.

Northwest improved to 13-9 overall and 7-3 in the MACJC and stayed unbeaten all time against Coahoma.

Trailing 4-1 after four in the opener, Leeah Henson's pinch-hit single helped spark a four-run fifth to give the Rangers their first lead, 5-4. Ally Judkins, Sallie Rose Carver and Tori Luke all provided RBIs in the inning.

Northwest carried the momentum into the sixth to plate three more runs, using Sarah Taylor's leadoff inside-the-park home run to center and scoring two more off Tiger errors.

Harley Smith's RBI-single in the seventh capped eight unanswered runs in the 9-4 Ranger win.

Luke, who entered in the fourth in relief of Smith in the circle, tossed four shutout innings and allowed just three hits while striking out three to improve to 6-3 on the year.

Coahoma out-hit Northwest 12-10 but committed eight costly errors in defeat.

Scoreless after three innings in the finale, Allison Williams' two-out, RBI-single to third gave Northwest a 1-0 lead after four.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Coahoma used back-to-back singles and got the tying RBI from Mayson Ray, followed by Kambresha Griffin's RBI-single to center, to take a 2-1 lead.

Kailey Walker's leadoff single helped start a Ranger rally in the sixth and she'd come around to score on Judkins' RBI-single to knot the game at 2-2. Carver's second triple of the day plated Judkins and Williams added another RBI-single to make it 4-2 Rangers after six.

Smith relieved Luke after four frames in the circle and tossed three shutout innings with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed to improve to 5-4 on the year. She improved her impressive strikeout/walk ratio to 48/5 in 17 appearances.

Northwest will hit the road on Sunday, March 26 to face Copiah-Lincoln in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
