Rangers Rally at Coahoma, Clinch MACJC Tournament Berth

CLARKSDALE – Trailing by as many as 11 and by seven at halftime, Northwest forced Coahoma into 10 second half turnovers as part of a game-changing 26-7 run to rally for a 72-63 come-from-behind road win at The Pinnacle.

Northwest improved to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in the north, sweeping the season series while clinching a spot in the MACJC Tournament Feb. 27-March 2 (hosted by South Men No. 1).

Despite shooting just 27 percent in the first half, Northwest led for a majority of the game's opening 8:36.

Leading 13-12 at the 11:24-mark, Milovan Topalovic's pair of free throws and ensuing jumper and Malik Bailey's 3-pointer helped Coahoma kickstart a 12-0 run to take its largest lead at 24-13.

Northwest rattled off the next nine points to immediately get back to within a basket, 24-22, using a 3-pointer from Keelin Jackson, four points from Cameron Walker and a tip-in from Shelby McEwen

Coahoma ended the half with eight of the final 11 points to take a 32-25 lead at the break.

After the Tigers stretched their lead to nine on the opening basket of the second half, Northwest began to chip away at the Coahoma lead and eventually took control of the game.

Trailing 44-43, Brandon Cranford's 3-pointer, followed by six straight points from Walker, started a 12-0 Ranger run as Northwest led 55-44 with 8:31 to play.

Coahoma never got within seven the rest of the way, with Northwest holding the Tigers to three field goals the final 5:23.

A poor shooting first half for the Rangers was righted in the second half, with Northwest shooting 51 percent (18-for-35) while holding Coahoma to 9-of-23 shooting.

Jackson finished with 14 points and nine boards to lead all Rangers, followed by Dakota Dailey with 11 and Walker with 10 points. Northwest outscored the Tiger bench 27-8 down the stretch and capitalized off 10 turnovers with a 19-5 edge.

Northwest will close out the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 23, playing host to Itawamba at 8 p.m. at Howard Coliseum.
