Ranger Softball Splits with Holmes and Mississippi Delta

GOODMAN – Sophomore Tori Luke went 6-for-7 on the day with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs and hit a walk-off two-run single up the middle to give Northwest an 8-7 victory against Mississippi Delta.

Northwest dropped a 10-4 decision to host Holmes earlier in the day, finishing with a Tuesday afternoon non-conference split in Goodman.

Northwest opened with the momentum in the early innings against Holmes (2-1), as sophomore Kailey Walker scored on a sac fly from Sallie Rose Carver in the top of the first to give the Rangers an early 1-0 advantage.

After Holmes tied it up off a Torey Daniels triple in the bottom of the frame, the Rangers responded with a two-run second inning, highlighted by an error and Sarah Taylor's sac fly to regain the lead at 3-1.

Northwest had the momentum cut short, however, when Madison Frazier came in to pitch late in the second for the Lady Bulldogs. The freshman finished the remaining five innings for Holmes and held the Rangers to just one run on three hits the rest of the way.

Holmes also found a boost at the plate thanks to a pair of RBIs from Daniels and Courtney Hatcher, tying the game at 3-3 after three innings. The Lady Bulldogs scored two more in the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth thanks to four hits and four Northwest errors, eventually putting the game out of reach.

Luke led the Ranger bats, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Carver finished 1-for-2 with an RBI of her own.

Freshman Harley Smith (0-2) took the loss, surrendering nine hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.

Madison Fields led a 15-hit attack for Holmes, going 4-for-5 in the leadoff spot. Emily Littlejohn and Jasmine Cox added three hits apiece.

In the afternoon game against MDCC, momentum was once again on the Rangers' side early.

Carver's single to center field scored Walker, giving Northwest a 1-0 lead. Smith then knocked in a two-run single to left center that allowed Luke and Allison Williams to score, extending the lead to 3-0 after one complete.

Mississippi Delta responded with back-to-back two run innings in the third and the fourth, taking a 4-3 lead on a two-run homer from Rebekah Garner.

Luke helped the Rangers tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring from third on a wild pitch, but the Trojans regained the lead in the top of the fifth off an RBI-groundout from Mayah Wright.

Both teams went back-and-forth over the next inning and a half and Mississippi Delta led 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Mistakes gave the Rangers life, though, as an error and two walks loaded the bases for Luke, setting up the walk-off single and the win.

Luke went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and closed out the final two innings in the circle for Northwest, capturing her first win of the season. Smith finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and struck out three batters in 4.2 innings.

Northwest (1-3) will travel to Booneville this weekend for a four-game stretch in the Northeast TigerFest.

The Rangers will open Friday's action with a pair of games against John A. Logan and Arkansas State, beginning at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available for all four games at www.sidearmstats.com/northwestms/softball.
