Rangers Split Opening Day of Northeast TigerFest

BOONEVILLE – Northwest split the opening day of the 2017 Northeast TigerFest on Friday, dropping a 4-0 decision to John A. Logan in the morning before bouncing back with an 8-4 win over Arkansas State's club team in the afternoon session.

The Rangers moved to 2-4 on the young season with the split and will close out the two-day tournament on Saturday with games against Wabash Valley at 2:45 p.m. and Mineral Area College at 4:30.

The Lady Vols opened the scoring in the second inning, taking advantage of a throwing error on what would've been an inning-ending fielder's choice. The throw was dropped at second base, allowing Megan Hampton to score for a 1-0 lead.

John Logan extended its lead to 2-0 in the third on Taylor Rogers' RBI-single through the left side, scoring Jordyn Smith after a leadoff double.

Northwest's best scoring chance came in the bottom half of the third. Kailey Walker walked and stole second with two away and looked to score on a tag up from second on Ally Judkins' hard hit fly ball to center, but the base umpire said she left early, thus ending the frame on an 8-6-2-4 double play.

The Lady Vols plated two more in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0, using Smith's two-run double up the middle.

Northwest got the potential tying run in the on-deck circle in the fifth after back-to-back singles from Alexis McShan and Walker before a flyout ended the game.

Sydnee Rushing went the distance for John Logan in a shutout, scattering four hits and three strikeouts.

Tori Luke (1-1) allowed two runs off two hits in three innings, making way for Harley Smith who allowed two runs off four hits in two frames.

Walker was 2-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base and now needs just five to set Northwest's all-time stolen base record.
