SENATOBIA – Leading by four heading to the fourth quarter,
Janesha Johnson scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the final period as Northwest outscored Mississippi Delta 22-6 to pull away for a 72-52 win.
Northwest improved to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in the north, while MDCC dropped to 2-16, 1-8 in the division.
The teams exchanged four leads and three ties in the opening 10 minutes, with
Shelbi Buford scoring five of the Lady Rangers' final six points as Northwest took a 16-12 lead after one.
MDCC responded with 11 of the next 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting to take a 23-22 lead with 5:57 left in the second quarter.
Johnson's layup and ensuing free throw put Northwest back on top, 25-23, and
Shernique Adams' 3-pointer extended the lead to five.
Alexis Augustus' 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in the quarter made it a 30-27 game at the break.
Northwest came out of the locker room with a purpose, scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter to push ahead 40-27.
MDCC was able to trim the lead down to just four, 50-46, after three quarters with the final six points.
Augustus' jumper pulled the lead within 53-50 with 7:35 to play before a dominating Lady Ranger run put the game well out of reach. Northwest ended the game on a 19-2 run for a lopsided 20-point victory.
Johnson scored 11 points in the quarter and Northwest held MDCC to just 3-of-21 shooting.
Adams had a career-high 16 points and six rebounds and
Destiny Gardner added 13 points and nine rebounds in the win. Augustus led MDCC with 20 points and six rebounds.
Northwest will travel to Coahoma on Thursday, Feb. 16 for a 6 p.m. tipoff at The Pinnacle.
