CLARKSDALE –
Deja Faulkner posted her first career double-double to lead four Lady Rangers in double figures, but Thursday night's game belonged to Coahoma, as four of five Lady Tiger starters scored in double figures and the hosts led for all but 1:09 in a convincing 87-76 win.
Northwest came out flat and Coahoma came out firing on all cylinders, outscoring the Lady Rangers 30-17 in the opening quarter.
Northwest's lone lead was in the game's opening 1:40, with
Averyale Joy and
Janesha Johnson hitting back-to-back 3s for an early 6-5 lead. Coahoma answered with a 14-5 run and never looked back.
Tomaja Shaw scored 13 of her career-high 20 points in the opening 10 minutes as Coahoma extended its lead to as many as 13 in the half and led 45-34 at the break.
Coahoma shot at a 46 percent clip against just 29 percent shooting for the Lady Rangers.
The Lady Tigers continued to pour it on, outscoring Northwest 23-11 in the third quarter to take a 68-45 lead after three quarters.
Northwest outscored Coahoma 31-19 in the fourth quarter and made it a game late.
Trailing 72-47 with 8:49 to play, Northwest forced four straight turnovers and hit 6-of-8 shots as part of a 13-1 run to get within 13 at the 6-minute mark.
Coahoma responded with an 8-1 run to stretch the lead back to 20, however, and wouldn't allow the Lady Rangers within 11 the rest of the way.
Shaw led five Lady Tigers in double figures, while Johnson's 18 points led Northwest. Joy added 14 points and nine assists,
Danielle Ratliff added a career-high 13 and Faulkner had 10 points and 12 boards.
Coahoma finished the night shooting 49 percent, while holding Northwest to 32 percent shooting and 5-of-30 from downtown.
Northwest will close out the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 23 at home against north division-leading Itawamba.
