MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Playing on back-to-back days for the second time this season, the Northwest men's basketball team handled its business with two lopsided wins over Tennessee Prep and Rhodes College JV to improve to 7-1.
In Thursday's 80-57 win over Tennessee Prep, the Diplomats didn't go away quietly early, taking a 16-15 lead with 9:08 to play in the first half.
The teams exchanged six leads over the opening 10 minutes before Northwest took control thanks to a 10-0 run.
Joseph Coleman scored four straight to start the run and it was capped by
Radarius Washington's 3-pointer as the Rangers led 25-16 with 6:52 left in the half.
Jitaurious Gordon's layup as time expired gave Northwest a 38-26 at the half.
The Rangers came out and scored 12 of the first 18 points of the second half to build an 18-point lead, led by six quick points from
Tremont Robinson.
Northwest built its lead to as many as 24 and Tennessee Prep got no closer than 16 the rest of the way.
Gordon led a balanced Northwest scoring attack with 13 points, followed by
Justin Flakes and
Miles Washington with 11 and Therrell Gosier with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Adam Price led the Diplomats with 21 points in addition to Jordan Grantham with 13.
On Friday night at Rhodes JV, Northwest raced out to a 24-point halftime lead thanks to 62 percent shooting and never looked back in a 107-57 rout of the Lynx.
Gosier scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the first half and T. Robinson had 14 as the duo combined for 29 points on 12 of 16 shooting.
Northwest hit six of its first seven shots to start the second half as the lead ballooned to 75-36. Washington, Robinson, Gosier and
Alex Shepard all had buckets during the 18-3 run.
Cameron Walker had 13 second half points as the Ranger bench outscored Rhodes 63-19 on the night.
Northwest closed shooting 57 percent against 31 percent for Rhodes.
Gosier's 20 points and 10 rebounds led the Rangers, followed by T. Robinson with 16, Walker with 15,
Alec Rayburn with 14 and
Clinton Moses with 13.
Northwest will host East Mississippi on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. to open MACJC North Division play.
