WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. –
Therrell Gosier II and
Justin Flakes led four Rangers in double figures, finishing with 16 apiece, as Northwest held off ASU Mid-South for a 75-72 road victory on Monday night.
Northwest fell behind 26-19 with roughly seven minutes left in the first half, but the Rangers permanently regained the lead a short time later, thanks to a pair of layups from
Alex Shepard and a three-pointer from Flakes.
Leading 27-26 with 4:48 left before halftime, Northwest closed the first half on a 9-5 scoring run to build a 38-31 lead at the break.
Despite trailing by nine in the early stages of the second half, the Greyhounds continued to hang around largely due to the efforts of Laquentin Miles, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and tied the game at 64 with a three-point shot at just under five minutes remaining in regulation.
Northwest weathered the storm, however, and managed to put the game away at the free throw line, as the Rangers hit 7-of-8 to hold off the Greyhounds' rally.
In addition to his 16-point total, Gosier finished with six total rebounds, tying Radarius Washington for the team-high.
Shepard and
Tremont Robinson finished with 13 and 10 points apiece, respectively, while Robinson was also credited with a team-leading six steals.
ASU Mid-South was led by 14 points from Terrandus Smith and 13 apiece from Miles and Dee Montgomery. Kamron Rose also added 10 off the bench.
Northwest shot 47 percent against 49 percent from ASU Mid-South, but the Greyhounds led the way at 59 percent from three-point range compared to just 17 percent from the Rangers.
Northwest (3-0) will now turn its attention to hosting the Tri-States Classic on Nov. 16-17. The Rangers will welcome Faith Prep (Thursday, 6 p.m.) and Lawson State (Friday, 2 p.m.) to Howard Coliseum before the Thanksgiving break.
