COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – In the first-ever meeting between the two programs in women's soccer, Northwest dominated host Southwest Tennessee 32-5 in the shot column but managed just a 2-0 victory Tuesday night in a match played at St. Edwards Independent School.
Northwest improved to 7-3 overall with its sixth shutout of the year, while the Lady Saluqis remained winless on the season.
Gaby Villatoro's first collegiate goal in the 9th minute, off a
Lauren Snyder assist, was all the scoring Northwest would need. Snyder's attempt right at the net was saved and Villatoro was there to grab the rebound and push it past the keeper.
The lead was 2-0 in the 28th minute after
Carolyn Rials' third goal of the year, hammering it into the back of the net off a
Landyn Hoover pass.
Northwest outshot Southwest 19-2 in the opening 45 minutes but was only able to find the two goals.
Taylor Savage was outstanding for the Lady Saluqis in net all night, stopping 19 shots in a match that could've seen five or six Lady Ranger goals.
Southwest (0-7) had its only real scoring chance in the 60th minute, with Katie Smith's free kick outside the box sailing wide right.
Northwest tacked on a dozen more shots in the final stanza but once again couldn't find the back of the net. The final shot tally was 32-5 in favor of the Lady Rangers, including a 21-2 advantage on goal. Fourteen players had at least one shot.
Liv Nault improved to 3-3 between the posts for Northwest in 28 minutes, while
Angel Hailey and
Makenzie Ellis combined for the final 62 minutes and had a save apiece.
The Lady Rangers step back into north division play on Friday, traveling to unbeaten and 17th-ranked Holmes in a match at Freedom Ridge Park.
