Lady Rangers Fend Off Coahoma 95-89 for Third Straight Win

SENATOBIAJanesha Johnson pumped in her first career double-double and Deja Faulkner added a career-high 17 points off the bench as Northwest won its third straight division game Monday night, 95-89, over Coahoma.

Northwest improved to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in division play, while Coahoma fell to 1-13 and 0-4 in the north.

The visiting Lady Tigers scored the game's first five points and built their lead to as many as nine in the opening quarter before a 10-4 Lady Ranger run pulled it to within 19-18 after one.

Back-to-back layups from Chrissah Shaw and Tamaria Thomas to start the second quarter put Northwest back in front 22-19 and the Lady Rangers would not relinquish the lead the game's final 29 minutes.

Northwest's bench provided a great spark in the second quarter, outscoring Coahoma 16-0 on a combined 6-of-12 shooting, led by six points from Faulkner.

Northwest closed the period on an 11-2 run to take a 51-41 lead at the half.

A 14-1 Lady Ranger run to start the fourth quarter extended Northwest's lead to a game-high 86-63 with 6:47 remaining. 

Limited to just seven players, Coahoma did not go away quietly in the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers closed the game on a 13-0 run to cut the final margin to six.

Averyale Joy scored 12 of her team-high 18 in the second half, Faulkner had 17, Shaw added 14 and Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead 12 Lady Rangers in the scoring column. 

Joy added eight assists to put her at 206 for her two-year Lady Ranger career, becoming just the ninth player ever to eclipse 200. 

Five scorers finished in double figures for Coahoma, led by Tranika Echols' 21 points, and two big double-doubles from Carnita Hammond (11 points, 20 rebounds) and Melvinisha Jenkins (16 points, 15 rebounds).

Northwest will step out of division play for the final time this season, traveling to ASU Mid-South for a 5:30 tipoff on Thursday, Jan. 26. The Lady Rangers won the first meeting between the teams, 88-85 in double overtime.
