SENATOBIA – A career-high 19 points from
Chrissah Shaw helped Northwest to a 75-65 win against Holmes on Tuesday night at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest picked up its first north division win, improving to 1-2 in division play and 7-4 on the season. Holmes dropped to 5-7 overall, 1-2 in the north.
After falling behind early 5-4, Northwest closed the opening quarter on a 16-3 run, sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from
Averyale Joy and
Shernique Adams. By the end of the first, Northwest had extended its lead to double-digits, 20-8.
Northwest continued the hot offense into the second quarter, stretching the lead to 17 points and keeping a double-digit lead throughout. The Lady Rangers led Holmes 38-27 at halftime.
A few trips to the charity stripe allowed Holmes to hang around in the second half, with the Lady Bulldogs eventually cutting the Northwest lead down to six in the waning moments of the third quarter.
Northwest regained some momentum in the fourth quarter, swelling the lead back to 16 points with 4:30 left in the contest. Despite being outscored 13-7 down the stretch, the Lady Rangers held on for the 10-point victory.
Ten different players scored for Northwest, led by Shaw's 19 points and eight rebounds. Joy also finished with 16 points on 3-of-6 aim from 3-point range and added six assists and five rebounds.
Aneisha Evans and Sharaey Jefferson led Holmes with 11 points apiece, with Nhamia Wilson adding 10 points in the loss.
Northwest will travel to Mississippi Delta (1-10, 0-2 north) on Thursday, Jan. 19. Tipoff from Moorhead is slated for 6 p.m.
