Rangers Fall 3-1 to Southwest Mississippi

SENATOBIA – Two second half goals from Southwest Mississippi broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Bears to a 3-1 victory over Northwest on Friday afternoon.

Northwest fell to 4-3-1 with the loss as Southwest moved to 7-3 and swept the season series for the first time in school history.

Morris Aitken struck first for SMCC, finishing a feed from Jaime Delor and Francisco Alisiardi, to put the Bears up 1-0 in the 17th minute.

Seconds later, however, it was James Longmire issuing the response for Northwest, finishing off a Peyton McKnatt bounce back to tie the match at 1-1.

Defense was the story for both teams to close the first half and for the beginning of the second half.

Southwest would end the scoring lull in the 67th minute, however, as Delor found his 16th goal of the season to put the Bears ahead 2-1.

Moments later, Southwest added to its lead with Phillip Mallet's goal in the 71st minute, sealing the 3-1 victory for the Bears.

Northwest finished 17-14 in the shots category with both teams even at eight shots on goal. The game got a little chippy late, with four yellow cards being issued, including an ejection on the SMCC side.

Brandon Carrillo finished with five saves on the day for the Rangers, while Kade Jenkins totaled seven for SMCC.

Northwest will return to action next Friday, Sept. 30 at Meridian. First kick is slated for 3 p.m.
