MERIDIAN – Behind Top 15 finishes from
William Mason and
Walker Wilkinson, the Northwest men's golf team posted its best finish of the year at Briarwood Country Club with a two-day 612 to finish third out of eight teams.
"We fought through a three and a half hour rain delay and it cost us a few strokes on Monday," volunteer assistant
Guy Purdy said. "But we played really well on Tuesday and shot the third-lowest round of the day. It looks like we're peaking at the right time and next weekend's state championship at Shiloh Ridge really sets up well for our game."
Mason fired a 72-73 to shoot 1-over-par and was named to the All-Tournament Team. A bogey on the final hole cost him a shot at tying for second and finishing at even par.
Wilkinson shot 78-73 and jumped up eight spots to finish in a T-14th with two other golfers. His round of 73 on Tuesday marked the lowest of his career in 22 rounds.
Devon Thomas finished in a T-26th (78-78),
Scott Hensley was 37th (79-81) and
Nic Caligaris was 48th (81-85) to round out the scores for the Rangers.
Co-Lin defeated host Meridian in a playoff to capture first place in the tournament. Both teams were tied at 584 at the end of regulation and the Wolfpack won on the first playoff hole. Northwest (612) was third in front of East Central (614) and Gulf Coast (615).
Grant Renegar was the overall medalist, firing a 69-72 to finish as the only golfer under par at minus-3.
Northwest will return to the links April 16-17 at Shiloh Ridge in Corinth for the MACJC Championship. Live scoring will be available for the tournament and the link will be posted soon.
