Softball Sweeps Conference Twinbill over Coahoma

SENATOBIA – There was no shortage of offense for Northwest in Monday's conference softball doubleheader against Coahoma, as the Rangers scored a combined 39 runs off 26 hits in a pair of 20-3 and 19-4 victories against the Lady Tigers.

The sweep allowed Northwest to improve to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the MACJC, while Coahoma fell to 0-12 and 0-4 in conference play.

(Game 1) After both teams failed to plate any runs in the first inning, the Rangers broke things wide open in the bottom of the second with a 14-run frame.

Freshman Tori Luke got the scoring started off a sac fly from Kayla Andrada. That run was followed by a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a fielder's choice from Allison Williams that drove in two runs. In all, five Rangers came away with RBIs in the inning, including three from Williams and two from Luke, Hailee Kolwyck (two-run home run) and Avery McCullough.

Northwest followed with a run in the third on McCullough's RBI-single to center field and scored five more in the fourth off RBIs from Williams, Andrada and Ashton Needham.

Coahoma spoiled the shutout with three runs in the fifth but the Rangers had all they needed for the Game 1 victory.

Freshman Leeah Henson (1-0) received credit for the win, as the Senatobia native tossed two shutout innings in relief, giving up three hits and striking out one batter. Luke also pitched two innings and scattered five strikeouts, while giving up just one hit.

(Game 2) The Rangers' offense picked up right where they left off in the opening game, tallying four runs right away in the first inning in the finale. Luke and Heath Griffith were responsible for three RBIs, as Northwest jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage.

The second inning was once again kind to the Rangers, as Northwest plated 10 runs in the frame, sparked by a wild pitch that scored Sallie Rose Carver from third base. Northwest followed with a sac fly from Luke and a two-run RBI-single from Kolwyck that set the Ranger offense in motion.

Northwest scored five runs over the next two innings, while the Lady Tigers got four on the board in the top of the fourth before going scoreless in the fifth.

Griffith went 2-for-3 in the second game with a three-run homer in the third and four RBIs. Carver also finished 3-for-3 at the plate, while Andrada and McCullough came away with two hits. McCullough finished a combined 5-for-5 on the day with four RBIs.

McCullough also picked up her first win of her career in the circle, giving up one hit while collecting one strikeout. Kolwyck and Needham also combined for four innings of work and 11 strikeouts.

Weather permitting, Northwest will be back in action Friday at noon against 7th-ranked Jones County.
