FULTON – In an NJCAA Top 20 showdown at the ICC Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon, the host Indians rode the arms of Katlin McDuffy and Carleigh Mills in the circle and peppered the ball around the field to sweep the Rangers by 7-1 and 8-1 finals.
Itawamba, ranked 10th nationally, improved to 21-4 overall and 6-2 in the MACJC while the Rangers, ranked 19th nationally, fell to 11-5 and 5-3 in conference play.
(Game 1) The Indians out-hit Northwest 13-4 in the opening game of the day, paced by the top of the lineup who combined to go 9-for-16 with six RBIs, and the defense played behind McDuffy who allowed just one run off three hits in six strong innings.
Kaitlyn Bradley's two-run home run to right-center gave ICC a 2-0 lead after one. The Indians would tack on a single run in the third and four more in the fourth – all with two outs – to go ahead 7-0 after four frames.
Heath Griffith was responsible for the lone Ranger run, driving home
Erin Claire Stegall in the sixth after Stegall's one-out single.
Tori Luke (5-3) lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs off nine hits.
Ashton Needham did a nice job in relief to close things out, scattering no runs, four hits and a strikeout the final 2.1 frames.
Bradley and Mamie Hollenhead had three hits apiece for ICC.
(Game 2) ICC scored three early runs and put it on cruise control behind Mills in the circle to complete the sweep with an 8-1 win.
After Northwest stranded a pair in the top half of the first, ICC used Alex Brown's solo shot to left for a 1-0 lead. Brown drove in the Indians' second run in the second off a groundout to short and Hollenhead followed with a two-out single, making it 3-0.
Trailing 6-0 in the sixth, back-to-back singles from Griffith and
Hailee Kolwyck put two on with no outs. The Rangers were only able to score one run, however, off
Kayla Andrada's RBI-groundout.
ICC responded with two in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and Bre Harford RBI-groundout to make the final 8-1.
Northwest loaded the bases in its final at-bat before a strikeout ended the game.
Kolwyck, Griffith and
Kailey Walker combined for six of the Rangers' eight hits. Kolwyck (2-1) also took the loss in the circle.
Northwest will host Copiah-Lincoln on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader. Live stats will be available.
