Piper Johnson and
Emily Newman pushed their singles opponents to the max but fell just short as Northwest dropped a 9-0 decision to 21st-ranked Hinds Friday afternoon at The ROC.
Northwest fell to 0-2 on the young season while Hinds improved to 8-2.
Hinds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in doubles action, winning 8-2, 8-3 and 8-1. The Lady Eagles quickly put the match away with wins at No.'s 4, 5 and 6 singles to take a 6-0 lead.
Johnson gave Brittany Weathersby all she could handle at No. 2 singles, rallying for a 6-3 win in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. Weathersby held on in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-8, to win the match.
Newman and Rachel Rhett were in a similar battle at No. 3 singles. Tied 6-6 in the opening set, Rhett defeated Newman 7-3 in a tiebreaker to take the set and won 6-2 in the second set for the win.
The Lady Rangers will be back in action tomorrow against nationally-ranked Jones at 2 p.m.
