BOONEVILLE –
Sallie Rose Carver and
Hailee Kolwyck combined to go 10-for-15 from the plate with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs and Northwest scored 33 runs in three games to sweep the opening day of the Northeast TigerFest.
Northwest improved to 5-0 on the young season, defeating Mineral Area College (12-2), 20th-ranked Jefferson College (7-6) and Three Rivers College (14-3)
– all in five innings.
Against Mineral Area to start the tournament, Northwest jumped ahead 7-0 after two innings. Heath Griffith's two-run shot to right in the second highlighted the big innings.
MAC got a pair of runs back in the third before Northwest responded with three more in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Erin Claire Stegall's two-run double to left-center and Annah Catherine Storey's RBI-single made it a 12-2 final.
Tori Luke scattered three hits, two unearned runs and three strikeouts in three innings to earn the win, while Aubrianna Jones took the loss for MAC after allowing nine runs off seven hits in three frames.
Storey, Stegall and Carver all had multiple hits in the win.
Northwest got off to another fast start against Jefferson College, plating five runs in the top of the first thanks to Luke's bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a grand slam from Kolwyck.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Vikings responded with five runs (all unearned) of their own in the bottom half in a 36-minute long inning. A bases-loaded walk and a bases-clearing double from Autumn McCoy knotted the game at 5-5.
The Rangers pushed back ahead in the second, using a leadoff double from Carver who came around to score off Kat Holley's RBI-single. Kolwyck added a two-out, RBI-double, scoring Allison Williams, to make it 7-5 Rangers.
Leading 7-6 after three frames, Luke shut down Jefferson the rest of the way and did not allow a hit the final three innings. An 11-run, 10-hit second inning against Three Rivers (Mo.) gave Northwest a 14-1 lead after two and the Rangers cruised to a Friday sweep.
Eight different Rangers had a hit, highlighted by Carver's 3-for-3 day. Griffith had three RBIs and
Olivia Owen and
Avery McCullough each added two hits.
Ashton Needham (2-0) tossed the final four innings in relief of Luke, scattering four hits, two runs, four walks and five strikeouts for the win.
Northwest will close out the TigerFest on Saturday with games against East Central College (11:15) and Arkansas State (2:45). Live stats available for both contests at
