Northwest Fends Off ASU Mid-South 83-70

SENATOBIA – Northwest needed a big second half for the third time in seven nights, outscoring ASU Mid-South by 17 points the final 20 minutes to hold on for an 83-70 win.

Northwest improved to 3-0 on the young season, while ASU Mid-South fell to 1-2. The two teams will meet again January 26 in West Memphis.

Dante Sterling's 3-pointer to open the game was the only lead the Rangers would have the ensuing 14 minutes.

The Greyhounds took their largest lead, 24-14, with 9:02 left in the opening half on a Jerrick Cole 3-pointer before a 15-3 Ranger run eventually pulled the game within 40-36 at the break.

Northwest turned up the defense in the second half and continually got to the free throw line to get back in the game.

A barrage of 3-pointers from Sterling, Therrell Gosier II and Keelin Jackson highlighted a 15-5 Ranger run to give Northwest a 58-50 lead with 13:17 remaining.

The Rangers never trailed the rest of the way, outshooting the Greyhounds at a 52-31 percent clip.

Jackson and Dakota Dailey combined for 20 second half points in addition to Shelby McEwen with nine of his season-high 16.

Northwest got to the free throw line 37 times against 12 for ASU Mid-South, outscoring them 22-6 which proved to be the difference on the night.

The Rangers will continue a season-long eight-game homestand Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Lawson State.
