Jaylan Shelton scored a career-high 17 points off the bench to pace five Rangers in double figures as Northwest sprinted past Tennessee Prep 100-77 Thursday night at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest improved to 5-1 on the season and will host Faith Prep at 3 p.m. Friday to close out a two-day tournament in Senatobia.
TPA scored 12 of the game's first 17 points to take its largest lead, 12-5, using the hot hand of Alex Torres.
Northwest settled in after a slow start, taking control of the game thanks to a 24-5 run, capped by
Cameron Walker's throwdown at the rim.
The Diplomats closed to within 34-33 with 4:35 left in the opening half before
Dakota Dailey scored six quick points to eventually give the Rangers a 48-40 lead at intermission.
Torres scored 28 of his game-high 40 points in the first half for TPA, connecting on 10-of-12 shots from the field.
Northwest began to wear the Diplomats down in the second half, scoring at will at the rim and getting to the charity stripe. The Rangers scored 36 of their 52 second half points in the paint.
Shelton had the hot hand for Northwest down the stretch, scoring 16 of his 17 points in the final nine minutes.
Dante Sterling had 16 points and eight rebounds,
Raekwon Bush had 14 points,
Therrell Gosier II added 12 and
Brandon Cranford had 10 to compliment 17 from Shelton.
Northwest outscored the TPA bench 62-10 and outrebounded the Diplomats 61-39.
