Lady Rangers Stage Huge Comeback at Northeast

BOONEVILLE – Six days after squandering a 24-point first half lead in a loss at Arkansas Baptist, Northwest was on the winning end of a major comeback Tuesday night at Northeast, rallying from 23 points down to stun the Lady Tigers 85-77 in overtime.

Northwest snapped a two-game skid to improve to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the north while Northeast dropped to 6-7 and 1-2.

Northeast took an 18-13 lead after a quarter of play, getting the Lady Rangers into early foul trouble and holding them to just 20 percent shooting. The lead grew to 49-30 at the half with Northeast shooting 54 percent against 23 percent for Northwest.

But as they have in three of the previous five meetings at Bonner Arnold Coliseum after trailing by double figures, Northwest started to mount a comeback in the second half and got hot from 3-point range.

Kelsey Brown hit back-to-back from downtown as part of three consecutive treys to quickly pull Northwest within 53-39. The deficit was down to 62-49 after three quarters of play.

Averyale Joy hit the back end of a one-and-one to cut the lead to single digits, 64-55, for the first time since early in the second quarter and Brianna Williams hit one free throw minutes later to make it 64-58 with 6:48 to play.

Sara Lytle banked in a jumper with 2:45 to play to tie the game at 69-69 and BrayLee Landreth's two free throws capped a 22-7 run to give Northwest its first lead of the night at 71-69 with 1:14 to play.

Northeast came back to tie the game at 73-73 and send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Northwest outscored the Lady Tigers 12-4 to complete the come-from-behind win despite shooting just 29 percent (27-of-92) for the game.

All five Lady Ranger starters scored in double figures, led by Lytle's 20 points and 10 rebounds. Williams added 16, Janesha Johnson and Brown added 12 and Joy had 11 points, six boards and four assists.

Northwest returns home on Thursday, Jan. 14 to host Mississippi Delta at 5 p.m.
