Rangers Sweep Lady Bulldogs in Home-Opener

SENATOBIA – Sophomores Kiley Dunagan and Jessica Holliday combined to strikeout 20 Lady Bulldogs on the day as the Northwest softball team swept its much-anticipated home-opener on Wednesday afternoon against Holmes by 3-2 (8 inn.) and 3-1 finals.

Northwest, winners in seven straight, improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the north division. Holmes dropped to 8-8 overall and 1-5 in the division standings.

(Game 1) The opening game of the day needed extra innings as Kassey Ard and Holliday each struck out eight and allowed two runs apiece over the first seven frames.

Northwest scored single runs in the second and third as pinch-runner Bree Thompson stole home on a double steal with Ashton Needham and Micalah Beall singled to left to score Janie Turner.

Holmes tied it at 2-2 in the third, taking advantage of two Ranger errors.

Neither team scored over the ensuing four frames as the game headed to extra innings.

Holliday held Holmes off the board in the top half of the eighth, which allowed Beall to help the Rangers walk-off to a 3-2 win with an RBI-single in the bottom half. Kendall Alford doubled with two outs and Christina Berryhill ran for her, scoring on Beall's single.

Beall finished with both of the Rangers' RBIs in the victory while Holliday (4-0) got the win and was 2-for-3 at the plate.

(Game 2) Erin Claire Stegall, Hanna Hunter and Brittany Rochelle combined for all six Ranger hits in a 3-1 win.

Northwest plated all three of its runs in the third inning, using a leadoff double from Stegall, single from Hunter and double from Rochelle to plate the first run. Beall followed with an RBI-groundout and Alford scored Turner off a sac fly.

Holmes' lone run came in the fourth off a Blair Little RBI-double.

Dunagan (3-1) struck out seven of the first nine Lady Bulldogs she faced and finished the game with 12 strikeouts, one shy of her career-high. Dunagan scattered five hits and the one run on 112 pitches/77 strikes.

Northwest will return to action on Friday, weather permitting, against Coahoma. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Senatobia.
