RAYMOND – Northwest split a road doubleheader with Hinds on Thursday afternoon at Rene T. Warren Field, with the Lady Eagles taking a 13-5 win (6) in the opener and the Rangers bouncing back with a 12-3 win (5) in the finale.
Northwest moved to 2-2 on the season while Hinds moved to 4-4.
(Game 1) Northwest scratched a run across in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, using an RBI-single by
Jessica Holliday to score
Erin Claire Stegall after a walk and stolen base.
Hinds would come roaring back with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 5-1 lead after one, taking advantage of two Ranger errors in the inning and four straight walks.
Northwest slowly chipped away at the Lady Eagles' lead the ensuing three innings, scoring a run in the second on
Drennan Nemnich's RBI-single and adding two more in the third on a perfectly executed double steal from Stegall and
Janie Turner and RBI-single from
Micalah Beall.
Hinds pushed its lead back out to 6-4 in the fourth, using a leadoff walk issued to Jessica Travis and scoring her on a two-out single by Alexis Patterson.
After getting a run back in the fifth on
Hanna Hunter's RBI fielder's choice to make it 6-5, Hinds plated three in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take a 13-5 run-rule win.
Bridgett Goss tossed a complete game for Hinds, scattering seven hits, five runs (two earned) and three walks.
Ashton Needham took the loss after allowing four runs in the first.
(Game 2) Hinds took a 1-0 lead after one, using a leadoff triple by Katie Bunch and scoring her on a wild pitch.
Northwest responded with 10 unanswered runs over the next three frames to take a commanding 10-2 lead after four.
Carla Avant and
Brittany Rochelle had RBI-hits in the second,
Olivia Owen had a solo home run in the third and Rochelle, Hunter and Beall all had run-scoring hits in the fourth.
Hinds scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but
Christina Berryhill's RBI-single and Stegall's double put the run-rule in effect for a Ranger win.
Holliday tossed a complete game, scattering six hits, three runs (two earned) and five strikeouts.
Northwest had 15 hits in the win by 10 different Rangers, five of those had multiple hits.
Weather permitting, Northwest will host Jackson State next Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. for its home-opener.
