Buffaloes Hand Rangers Rare Home Loss, 80-79

SENATOBIA – Fred Albright scored a game-high 18 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer from the left wing with 5 seconds left to lift Arkansas Baptist to an 80-79 win Thursday night at Howard Coliseum.

The Buffaloes avenged a 105-100 loss to the Rangers back on Nov. 10 in Little Rock to improve to 11-8 overall, while Northwest suffered a rare home loss to drop to 7-4.

Northwest squandered a 14-point lead, 60-46, with 12:54 remaining, making just five of its final 20 shots, including a dunk at the buzzer.

Chris Journett single-handedly got the Buffaloes back in the game, scoring eight consecutive points to pull ABC within four with 6:16 to play.

Northwest managed a small 2-4 point lead down the stretch until Deonta Thomas' jumper and ensuing free throw gave ABC a one point lead, 77-76, with 51 ticks left.

Kieth Broome Jr. appeared to give Northwest a one point lead on the Rangers' next possession, but his made basket on Thomas' foul was eventually waived off. He hit the back end of the 2-shot foul, tying the game but giving the ball back to ABC with 26 seconds left.

Albright then delivered the dagger for ABC, making an off-balance three from the left wing to give the Buffaloes an 80-77 lead with 5 seconds left.

Northwest quickly pushed the ball up the floor in an attempt to tie the game and force overtime, but Aston Morton mistakenly dunked the ball to end the game instead of shooting a possible 3-pointer to tie.

Both teams shot 36 percent for the night, but ABC capitalized off 19 Ranger turnovers to outscore Northwest 28-9 in points off turnovers. The Buffaloes' bench also owned a 46-31 advantage.

Four Rangers scored in double figures, led by 14 by Broome, 12 apiece from De'Sean Dockery and Sebastian Petty and 10 points and nine rebounds from Ashton Woodson. Sharwyn McGee, battling foul trouble, had six points, eight boards and three blocks. Dockery added seven rebounds and six assists for a near triple-double.

ABC was led by 18 from Albright, 14 from Dexter Porchia and 12 from Chris Journett.

Northwest returns to action on Monday, January 12 at 7 p.m. against Northeast.
