Rangers Drop 101-97 2OT Decision to Tigers

SENATOBIA – Northwest was outscored 10-4 in the final two minutes by Northeast in a 101-97 double overtime loss on Monday night.

Northeast won its fifth straight game to improve to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the north, while Northwest fell to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in division play.

In a wild game that saw 22 lead changes, 18 ties, 71 combined fouls and 102 free throws, it was the visiting Tigers who came away with a big road win in Senatobia.


The two teams exchanged the lead six times until Northeast pushed ahead 17-15 and then reached their largest lead of the half, 30-20, with 2:47 to play. 

Northwest went into the half trailing 35-27, with the bench scoring 24 of the Rangers' 27 points.


Northwest opened the second half with a 14-6 run to regain the lead 42-41, capped by Ashton Woodson's two free throws and a fast break layup.

The teams exchanged leads eight more times until Sharwyn McGee tied the score with a layup with 5 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime at 80-80.

The back-and-forth game continued throughout the first overtime. Northwest was leading by three with 11 seconds left, 89-86, when Northeast's Desmin Harris was fouled with 2 seconds left and made all three free throws to tie the score again at 89-89 and force a second overtime.

Northwest pushed ahead 93-91 on a jumper by Woodson before a 
10-4 run secured a 101-97 win for the Tigers.

Northeast outrebounded Northwest 60-42 and made 13 more free throws, the difference in the game.

Four Northwest players scored in double figures, led by Sebastian Petty and McGee with 15 points each. De'Sean Dockery and Woodson added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Raheem Sorrell scored a game-high 22 points, Dimario Jackson added 21 points, Harris contributed 15 and Jack Nichols added 13 points to lead Northeast's roster.

Northwest shot 42 percent on the night against 46 percent shooting for the Tigers. 

Northwest will return to action at Mississippi Delta on Thursday, January 15 in Moorhead. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
