JACKSON, Tenn. – Sophomores
Jacquelyn Brooks and
Kristina Mays scored season-highs of 16 and 14 points and Northwest rolled to an 85-64 win at Jackson State to win its first game of 2015.
Northwest improved to 10-2 overall, its best 12-game start since the 1996-97 season, while Jackson State fell to 5-8. The Lady Rangers swept the season series 2-0 and have won five of the last six.
Northwest scored the game's first six points and quickly built a 22-7 lead on 14 consecutive points in the paint.
The Lady Ranger lead was 40-25 at the half, thanks in large part to 20 bench points. All told, all but one Lady Ranger contributed at least a bucket in the win.
Mays scored six of her 14 points minutes into the second half and the lead grew from 15 to 22 on a free throw by
Aspriona Gilbert. Brooks also scored 10 points during a 2:30 stretch to finish with a team-high 16 points and seven boards.
Northwest shot 40 percent for the game against 35 percent shooting for the Lady Generals.
Gilbert and
Bethany Lytle finished with seven points apiece in addition to three others with six points. No one played more than 19 minutes in the lopsided win.
Andrea Moffitt scored 21 points and added 17 rebounds to lead JSCC in addition to 15 points from Kenya Jordan and 13 from Quinnisha Thomas.
Northwest will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 5 p.m., playing host to Arkansas Baptist.
