7th-Ranked Bulldogs Turn Back Rangers 63-7

Box Score PERKINSTON – Gulf Coast sophomore quarterback Jason Smith rushed for 107 yards and four scores and also threw a pair of touchdown passes as the 7th-ranked Bulldogs raced past Northwest 63-7 Thursday night.

MGCCC improved to 2-0 and took a 19-17-2 all-time lead in the series. Northwest dropped to 0-2.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding 35-0 lead midway through the second quarter, taking advantage of great field position on special teams play and using the legs of Smith.

Northwest got on the board with 5:20 left in the second quarter when Karsten Miller connected with West Virginia transfer Jacob McCrary for a 70-yard touchdown. It was the freshman's first collegiate catch and touchdown.

MGCCC held Northwest scoreless the rest of the way and tacked on three more scores, two by Chris Robinson from 3 and 64 yards, to trigger a running clock in a 50-minute second half.

The Bulldogs outgained Northwest 455-209 for the night, including 296 yards on the ground.

Offensively for the Rangers, Justin Crawford rushed for 62 yards on 10 carries and Terreous Johnson had 14 carries for 53 yards. Miller finished 6-of-19 for 103 yards and a touchdown and was sacked four times.

UNC Charlotte transfer Terry Caldwell had a game-high 10 tackles, including seven solo, and now has 22 through his first two games in a Ranger uniform.

Northwest will open north division play Thursday, Sept. 11 at Northeast (0-2). Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
