Box Score SENATOBIA – Northwest had its 2014 home-opener at Ranger Soccer Field against Meridian Tuesday, with freshman forward
Abigail Morales scoring in the 57th minute to give the Lady Rangers a 1-0 victory.
Northwest improved to 3-0 on the year, tying its best start in school history, while Meridian dropped to 0-2.
Morales scored by taking advantage of a scramble inside the offensive 18-yard box. Fellow freshman
Jameka Barr created the assist by bringing the ball into scoring range and sliding it to Morales who found the back of the net behind Meridian goalkeeper Chanler Pickering.
The momentum shifted to Northwest's offensive end during the second half, after going into halftime with a null-null score. The Lady Rangers made their game plan to shoot more, and did just that, by doubling the shots taken in the first half. They outshot Meridian 23-6 during the game.
The Lady Rangers showed a strong defensive front starting with sophomore
Sidney Bond to the back line along with sophomore
Breanna Kitchens and freshmen
Kayla Boutwell and
Kayleigh Sims. This fearsome foursome helped freshman goalkeeper
Ashley Nelson post her third game shutout with three saves in the process. Pickering collected 10 saves on the day for Meridian.
Northwest will look to continue its winning-streak on Friday, August 29 at 2 p.m. against Southwest Mississippi.
