Box Score 2 SUMMIT – The Northwest Lady Rangers kicked off the 2014 season in style this weekend, knocking off both Copiah-Lincoln and Southwest Mississippi by a combined score of 12-0.
Leading Co-Lin 1-0 at the half, Northwest broke through for four goals in the second half to pull away for a 5-0 win. Four of the Lady Rangers' five goals came from freshmen, while all three assists came by way of sophomores.
"I think we wore Co-Lin down in the second half, but our fitness is not as good as it should be," second-year head coach
Levi Nunnally said. "We were a bit more fit than they were and are a little deeper as a team."
Northwest out-shot Co-Lin 25-2, led by
Abigail Morales' eight shots and two goals.
Tristan Kitchens,
Brooke Lester and
Jameka Barr each netted goals in their collegiate debuts. Assists were credited to
Holly Newman (2) and
Malorie Hodges.
Ashley Nelson needed just one save to post her first clean sheet between the posts.
Northwest exploded for five first half goals in a 7-0 rout of Southwest on Saturday, including the season's first hat-trick from Morales. Kitchens and Newman each added goals in the first half, while Lester and Barr scored their second goals of the young season in the second half.
The Lady Rangers out-shot the Lady Bears 27-3 (17-2 shots-on-goal) in the victory.
Northwest will return home for matches on Tuesday, Aug. 26 vs Meridian and Friday, Aug. 29 vs Southwest.
