Cable, Lear Sign with East Texas Pump Jacks

KILGORE, Texas – Outgoing sophomores Tanner Cable and James Lear of Northwest have signed to play summer ball for the East Texas Pump Jacks in the esteemed Texas Collegiate League.

The Pump Jacks franchise began in 2008 and is known to deliver some of the top college baseball talent from around the country. The Jacks won the 2012 TCL Championship and have also won four division titles.

The team plays its home games at Kilgore's historic Driller Park which seats 3,000 fans. Built in 1947 and occupied by a minor league team until 1950, Driller is widely regarded as the top baseball facility in East Texas.

Cable was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft, but opted to return to Northwest this spring. He responded by going 6-2 this season with a 4.27 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 41 innings and was named second team all-state.

As a freshman, Cable finished third on the staff with 42 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .249 average in 14 appearances and posting a 4-4 record and 4.11 ERA in 47 innings.

A 2014 MACJC Second Team All-State selection, Lear set a new Northwest single-season (35) and career (55) stolen base record this season while hitting .340 with seven doubles, a triple, two home runs and 20 RBIs. He added a team-best 33 walks and team-high 58 runs scored from his leadoff position.

Lear played in 48 games for the Rangers as a freshman, seeing time in right field, second and third base. He batted .318 with five doubles, 15 RBIs, 36 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.

Both players have signed with four-year schools, with Lear headed to USM and Cable going to Delta State.
