Box Score 2 BOONEVILLE – Northwest picked up a big road sweep on Saturday at Harold T. White Field, knocking off Northeast by 6-3 and 5-4 finals to win the season series over the Tigers, 3-1.
Northwest improved to 20-12 overall and 8-6 in the north while Northeast fell to 16-14 and 9-5.
The Rangers pounded out 22 hits in the sweep, including a 6-for-9 effort from
Taylor King, and got solid starting pitching from
Matt Ferguson and
Tanner Cable who each went six innings in wins.
Despite four errors in the opener, Northwest was able to rally from an early 2-0 deficit thanks to a four-run seventh inning. T. King's RBI-double, followed by
Stephen Sexton's RBI-double tied it at 2-2 after three.
Northeast went back in front 3-2 in the fifth thanks to Trent Turner's RBI-single.
But four runs off two hits, an error, a passed ball and two wild pitches allowed Northwest to push in front for the first time in the seventh at 6-3.
Jay King reached on an E5 to score the tying run while
Luke Latham,
Brennan Pugh and
Tanner Densford all came around to score thanks to the aforementioned pitching miscues by reliever Blake Drabik.
Domenick Carlini then shut the door in a Game 1 win, holding the Tigers hitless the final three innings with five strikeouts for his second save of the year. He moved into a T-8 all-time with 102 career strikeouts and is just one of nine players in school history with 100+ in a career.
Ferguson (4-3) went 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs (one earned) for the win while reliever Ben Hellums (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (all unearned) in two relief innings.
Northwest out-hit Northeast 12-7 in the victory, led by
Kramer Hollenbach and King with three hits apiece.
Cable (3-2) put together one of his best outings of the year in a Game 2 win, scattering two hits, three runs and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
Northwest led 3-0 into the fourth inning, using
Kody Kimbrough's first collegiate home run and an RBI-groundout by Hollenbach in the third as well as a sac fly by Kimbrough in the fourth.
The teams then exchanged runs in their ensuing at-bats, with Northeast getting a sac fly from Turner and King hitting a solo home run, to make it 5-1 Rangers after six.
Cable then ran into trouble in the seventh with back-to-back walks and was relieved by
Cody Waddell. A single and RBI-double off the top of the wall quickly made it 5-3 with no outs and another pitching change brought in
Tyler Scholl.
With the go-ahead run at the plate, Scholl struck out Scott Pala and got back-to-back groundouts to preserve the win and pick up his seventh career save.
Northwest out-hit Northeast 10-4 in the G2 win, led by T. King's three hits. Hollenbach went 1-for-4 to extend his reached base streak to a whopping 28 games.
Northwest will travel to Holmes on Wednesday, April 9 for a 2 p.m. double dip in Goodman.
